When you bring home a brand-new puppy, every little feature is adorable—especially that tiny button nose! But if you’ve noticed that part of your puppy’s nose may be pink instead of fully black, you might be wondering if it’s normal.
🌸 The Science Behind Puppy Nose Pigment
Puppies are born with immature pigmentation, and their nose color can take several weeks—or even months—to fully develop. Many puppies start out with pink noses that gradually darken as melanin production increases. This is completely natural and varies by breed, genetics, and individual development.
🐶 When Does a Puppy’s Nose Turn Black?
Most puppies begin showing changes in nose pigment around 6 weeks old. You may see the pigment spread gradually from the center outward. In Cavachons, full pigmentation is common right around the time they’re ready to go home.
At Cavachons by Design, our Cavachon puppies are typically born with pink or partially pink noses, which usually become fully pigmented in black by 8 weeks of age—or shortly after. It’s one of the many sweet transitions that happen in those early puppy weeks!
It’s also worth noting that some dogs—especially during the colder months—may experience a “snow nose” or “winter nose.” This harmless lightening of the nose is temporary and often returns to full color with warmer weather.
❤️ What If the Nose Lightens Again Later?
If your Cavachon’s nose turns lighter after full development and they are no longer a puppy, it could indicate a nutritional deficiency, especially in essential nutrients like zinc or copper. If you notice a loss of pigment along with changes in appetite, energy, or coat condition, it’s worth discussing with your breeder and/or veterinarian.
✨ Final Thoughts
Watching your puppy grow and change is one of the best parts of bringing a new furry friend into your life. A pink nose at first? Totally normal. In our experience, that nose will be a shiny black button in no time!
